Grades 6-8 Virtual Academy (Independent Studies)
For pupils in grades 6 to 8, inclusive, independent study provides both daily live interaction and weekly synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.
-
Independent Studies is an alternative to traditional in-person classroom instruction and is consistent with a school district's course of study and is not an alternative curriculum.
-
Independent Studies is a type of blended learning which is a mix of traditional instruction and curriculum delivered through instruction via digital and online media.
-
Assignments are weeklong assignments and are comparable to a 5-day setting at a traditional school.
-
Weekly appointments allow for flexibility and eliminates time constraints.
-
Students spend a minimum of one day a week receiving synchronous instruction from highly qualified teachers.
-
Daily live interaction will be during homeroom 4 days a week (between 8:30-9:00am) and once a week during Science Lab (between 8:00 - 9:00). Live interaction is defined as: Interaction between the pupil and school classified or certificated staff (and may include peers), provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness. This includes but is not limited to wellness checks, progress monitoring, provision of services, and instruction. This interaction will take place via Google Meet. Students must have their cameras on at all times and their full faces in the camera frame.
Legislation allowing for Distant Learning has expired. Families interested in an alternative to face to face instruction, have the option of participating in Independent Study through Horizon Virtual Academy.
In addition, students have the option to transfer back to their home school. Horizon will work to transition pupils whose families wish to return to in-person instruction from independent study expeditiously, and, in no case, later than five instructional days.
