Grade TK - 5 Home School Model

Horizon (TK-5) Independent Studies Homeschool model is a fully accredited TK-5 Alternative Education Program provided to families whose student is working at grade level.  Horizon’s TK-5 students are taught at home by the parent/guardians using curriculum adopted by DSUSD, and based on California Common Core State Standards, along with detailed weekly lesson plans.  Horizon TK-5 Academic Program is rigorous and not designed for “catching-up” on a student’s studies. Unlike traditional educational programs, students and parents have flexibility. Without adhering to a time clock, parents/guardians are expected to work at least 5 hours each day with their students.  Each parent/guardian will have continuous support by an experienced credentialed supervising teacher. An experienced, fully credentialed supervising teacher will assure accountability with all state and district requirements during mandatory weekly meetings. The supervising teacher will also provide one-on-one support for the student and parent/guardian during the weekly meetings.  For hands-on parents who strive to stay directly involved in their student’s social and academic journey, this is a golden opportunity.

  • The parent/guardian will provide instruction and assessments in Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Physical Education, Art, and Technology.
  •  The parent/guardian is responsible for initialing and correcting all assignments and assessments, placing a percentage grade on work completed by the student, to direct further instruction ensuring subject area mastery.
  • Report Cards will be completed by the Supervising Teacher working together with the parent/guardian
  • The parent/guardian will be provided detailed lesson plans based on curriculum adopted by DSUSD, and California Common Core State Standards resulting in students developing the critical thinking skills necessary to be competitive in the global economy.
  • Weekly support from an experienced, credentialed Supervising Teacher.  In addition to the mandatory weekly meeting, a daily check-in for interaction is required by the State
  •  Textbooks, support materials, workbooks and other resources are provided to families at no cost.  All non-consumable materials will need to be returned to the school library at the end of the term.
  • The students in Grades 3rd through 5th will participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and other required State Testing.
  • Extensive online resource links are available to students and families on the For Students page
  • The program design includes blended learning opportunities, and Project-Based Learning.
  • The program offers flexibility for families and students to manage their academic schedule on a daily basis.
  •  Horizon TK-5 Independent Studies requires a high-level of parent/guardian involvement.
